The 7 Deadly Sins...in images. My take on those words & actions in one photo.

A total labour of love, I thought if this project more than 3 years ago (or thought of attempting it, rather), and I only completed it a few months ago. I had never seen anything like it done, and I have always been fascinated by the 7 Deadly Sins and what they insinuate and signify. A little taboo, a little macabre, a little glamorous, and ultimately, a little within all of us.
Trying to convey that ONE word of each sin and the entirety of what it meant, into ONE image with all it's meaning and innuendo, was definitely a creative challenge I was up for and slowly became obsessed with...as my friends will tell you, hahahaa. I'm sure they were all ready to punch me in the head to shut up about it. So yah, the subjects in each image are either close friends of mine or actual client's who eagerly jumped on board and signed up for the project, xo to you guys! I have also added captions to each photo of what the overall idea/concept for the image was and how it came to be.
In closing, I love all kinds of photography; from whimsical baby photos, to pop-art glamour, to sports and military captures, all the way down to cute lil bunnies even. But a genre I like to dabble in the most is Dark Art. Surrealism. Images that aren't so pinky-pastel and perfect and "life is like puppy dogs & candy canes!". Because that's not always the case now is it. It's gritty, edgy, seedy, selfish, hidden, shameful, and sometimes bloody.
Enjoy.

Pride
"And beware lest you say in your mind and heart, my own might and the strength of my own hand have achieved all these things for me. When pride & arrogance comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom". - Deuteronomy 8:17, Proverbs 11:2
As vanity is the basis of Pride, atleast in this concept I chose, having some masculine, well built man shooting himself up with steroids was a no-brainer. He's too prideful of his looks to just go with the naturality given to him by God, but chooses a drug to obtain and keep his 'beauty'. The countertop full of pills to enhance his fitness and weight further went on to demonstrate how his ego and looks were his first priority.

Gluttony
"Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control."
- Proverbs 25:28
My friend Christina & I came up with this concept together. An outwardly thin, fit, beautiful girl (just getting home from the gym even) immediately heading to her bad food stash hidden in her closet and gorging, to make her feel good in some way that looking good or atleast portraying the look of a girl who has everything, just doesn't bring. The binging and purging insinuation here maybe a sign of inner self-loathing.

Envy
"They have become filled with wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips. They are conceited and understand nothing. They have an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions." - Romans 1:29, 1 Timothy 6:4
These actually are three sisters and their mother, portraying the envious siblings to their golden-haired, talented ballerina sister who is both favored and worshiped by their mother. Whether it be a 'sibling rivalry' or 'jealous of the girl who gets the crowd's attention' that the viewer takes away from this, I think it's safe to say that we've all probably dealt with some of this in our life. But hey, in order to be great one must be willing to be mocked, hated, and misunderstood. I'm game. ;)

Greed
"For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? You could never pay enough to buy back your life. " Mathew 16:26
Concept for this was basically for a beautiful woman to be cloaked in mink, draped in expensive jewels, more and more, showing she can basically never get enough or stop thinking higher of herself that she deserves more. Never satisfied. Never content. Never sated. But because of that way of thinking materialistically, she is in a very dark place, because what's worth it in materialism?
What do you gain spiritually?
Greed is probably the most controversial sin, because is it really a SIN? I will quote the ultra fabulous Gordon Gekko (one of my favorite movie characters EVER in the most infamous movie monologue ever!!)  for the answer-
"My point is, ladies & gentleman, is that greed is good. Greed is right. Greed works.Greed clarifies, cuts through and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed in all of it's forms. Greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge, has marked the upward surge of mankind."
- Michael Douglas, Wall Street

Lust
"I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. My husband is not at home, he has gone on a long journey. With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter,
like a deer stepping into a noose till an arrow pierces his liver, like a bird darting into a snare, little knowing it will cost him his life." -- Proverbs 7: 16-23
No stretch here. Concept is, husband arrives home early from a business trip and walks in on his beloved wife amidst an affair. Fun fact: this is actually the same guy, one shot of him entering, merged with one of him shirtless portraying the lover. And the couple is an actual husband & wife.

SLOTH
Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain - Corinthians 15:58
Ugh, we aaallll suffer from sloth. This concept was basically a "get outta bed and take care yo' kids!!!" Parents completely ignoring the cleanliness of home, engaging their kids, paying any attention to anything other than lazing around and laying there.

Wrath
"In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry. For wrath kills a foolish man" - Ephesians 4:26
I had to use myself and a buddy for this sin because after asking 4 couples to do it, no one wanted to, haha. Concept with this shot is a battered woman, who after finally having had about enough from her drinking, abusive husband, decides to shoot him dead...and celebrate the brief triumph, vengeance and relief with a glass of wine, a smirk of satisfaction on her face, and her gun beside her.
